I've driven the United States 47 times, visiting all 48 contiguous states. I can't count how many times I've travelled north and south. I remember going to AAA to get their "Triptiks." Triptiks were fantastic. I'd go into an AAA office and tell them where I was going. I'd sit down with a representative, and we'd plan out the route I wanted to take and create alternate routes to consider. We'd physically hi-light the route on both a national map and regional or state maps. Then the rep would find individual pages of maps that they would turn into an itinerary. Each page would
have whatever highway I was travelling. The page would include rest areas, restaurants, gas stations, and motels and hotels, along with the mileage and the time that it should take to drive. My family's game was to see how much more quickly we could complete the route than the page said it should take. One year, my brother and I travelled from Portland Oregon to Pensacola, FL in 48 hours and 34 minutes. That particular year we stopped and watched a movie in Amarillo, TX because a hurricane was rolling through the panhandle of Florida and we wanted to take our time getting there.
Perhaps because of this upbringing, but I get wanderlust regularly. I get restless, and I need to explore and roam. The last three years inoculated me a bit. Every week I'd drive or ride to Seattle. And then for our honeymoon, Paula and I took a road trip to Lake Tahoe.
Today we are leaving on a business/pleasure road trip to British Columbia (One of my favorite places.) We are going to see friends along the way and talk about A.C.T. Intl., reFresh, and Gracefall. I am looking forward to it. A friend is coming to take care of our animals, and though we will miss them a great deal, we know that they are being cared for.
If you are the praying sort, would you pray for us for safety, courage, wisdom, and connection over the course of this week? We are in a season where we are actively seeking ministry partners to help us build the section of wall in the Kingdom of God to which we have been assigned. It is a daunting, humbling, frightening, and holy task. This is one of our moments to be faithful.
